The International Authentic Pheidippides Run represents the ultimate test of endurance, inviting athletes to follow in the footsteps of the legendary messenger.
The non-profit Athletic and Cultural Association "Authentic Pheidippidean Run" was founded in 2024 with the primary main of preserving and continuing this historic race.
Our mission is to honor Greek history and the athletic ideal, while promoting the values of endurance,fair play,and the transcendence of personal limits.
Understanting,day by day, the magnitude and weight of the historic running event, the Association is committed, with honor and pride, to making every possible effort to live up to the history it represents.
RACE REQUIREMENTS
Taking into account the historical and athletic significance of this event, the Organizing Committee has decided not to exclude anyone from the dream.
For some, it is a dream of a lifetime, and for others, the right to dream.
THERE ARE NO RACE REQUIREMENTS
Athletes are required to be fully informed and take all necessary precautions regarding the difficulty of this event.
It was 490BC.
The Persian army was advancing towards Athens, burning and destroying everything in its path. The sacred values and traditions of the Greeks were at stake. Along with them, the world as we know it today was in danger — the freedom of Greece and Europe.The Athenians gathered and decided to send the long-distance messenger (hemerodromos) Pheidippides to Sparta to seek the help of the Spartan army.Pheidippides set off from Athens, crossed Corinth, and arrived in Sparta. There, heinformed the Spartans of the imminent danger. They, however, could not march before the full moon, according to their sacred laws. They promised to set out immediately after.
Disappointed, Pheidippides took the road back, fearing that by the time the Spartans arrived, it might already be too late. As he was crossing Mount Parthenion, he had a vision of the god Pan, the goat-footed god of shepherds, son of the god Hermes and the nymph Dryope.Pan complained that the Athenians had not dedicated a shrine to him and announced that he would help in the battle by spreading fear and "panic" among the Persian army. In return, he requested that a temple be built for him if his word proved true.Pheidippides returned to Athens and conveyed both the Spartans' delay and the divine prophecy: the Athenians would defeat the outnumbered and better-equipped Persians.
The decision was made to confront the enemy at Marathon. The Athenian army, under General Miltiades, marched to Marathon. With the support of a thousand Plataeans and Miltiades’ ingenious tactics, the Greeks achieved a victory that changed history. If this battle had been lost, Greece, Europe, and the entire world would be different today.
The route follows the ancient path from Athens to Eleusis, Megara, Ancient Corinth, and continues toward Agios Vasileios, Ancient Kleonai, and Ancient Nemea. It then heads toward Malandreni, Lyrkeia, Karya, climbs Mount Artemisio, descends to Nestani, passes throughTegea, and enters the Tripoli–Sparta road, finally ending at the Statue of Leonidas at the Sparta stadium.The return journey follows the same points, ensuring the most faithful representation possible of the route run by the ancient messenger Pheidippides.
The Authentic Phidippides Run revives this historic journey, following the ancient path as closely as possible, challenging modern athletes to test their limits in the ultimate experience of space and time.

Finish of the last athlete in Athens: November 23, 2026 at 08:00 a.m.
Total distance: 485,3 kilometers (about 243 kilometers each way)
Time limit: 98 hours (start and finish at the Ancient Agora of Athens)
ATHENS-SPARTA-ATHENS-MARATHON
Race start: November 19, 2026 at 06:00 a.m.
Finish of the last athlete in Marathon: November 23, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.
Total distance: 524.9 kilometers
Time limit: 100 hours, with time limit (cut-off point) 93 hours to reach Ancient Agora of Athens at 485,3 km.

The Organizing Committee of the 10th Authentic Pheidippides Run (Athens – Sparta – Athens) is committed to creating a sustainable sporting event that incorporates the three principles of Fair Play, the historic route of Pheidippides, and the environmental policy and management required to ensure a sustainable event.
We are dedicated to implementing a program that utilizes the natural resources required for the event in a sustainable manner, reduces any negative environmental impacts caused by the event, and manages the waste generated during its course.
